Another solid week last week, let’s not waste any time with our outlandish picks for this weekend (and beyond)!
Alexander Zverev vs Kevin Anderson – Correct Score – Zverev to win 3 sets to 1 @ 3.70
The US Open is back and with it come some mouth-watering clashes! Most notably, German wunderkid Alexander Zverev will face tour veteran Kevin Anderson in a round one clash that could easily feature in the last eight in another tournament. The German has built a reputation as never being able to take the extra step and fulfill his enormous potential. But with no Federer or Nadal this year, now’s as good a chance as he may ever get. He won’t find it easy against Anderson, but he should get the win. In four sets seems likely as the two get back up to speed with Grand Slam tennis. 1 unit.
Arsenal vs Liverpool – Community Shield – 1×2 Liverpool & Both Teams to Score @ 2.90
Liverpool will be looking to add yet another trophy to their already illustrious trophy cabinet when they kick off their new season at Wembley against the FA Cup winners, Arsenal. With extra short breaks and extra short pre-seasons, this match may be more about getting through unscathed than ever before. We may see different lineups than we will when the real stuff starts, which could indeed lead to goals. Arsenal will be missing some key members of their defence (Mustafi and Chambers specifically) which will see Liverpool be too strong, but we expect Arsenal to hit the scoresheet. They certainly know where the goals are at Wembley. We think Liverpool to win, with both teams scoring is the best bet here at 2.90. 1 unit.
Mazatlan FC vs Tigres UANL – 1×2 & Total – Tigers and over 1.5 @ 2.19
The newest franchise team in Liga MX sit at the bottom of the league after 6 rounds. They have been involved in the (joint) most goals (18) out of 18 teams in the league. Their club has recently been rocked by many of their staff from 38 players of their staff, incl. coaches and youth teams, have tested positive for Covid. They welcome a Tigres team, with the leagues top scoring striker in the cultured Frenchman Andre-Pierre Gignac. Him and his strike partner Eduardo Vargas should be too much quality up front against a brand new team struggling early doors – the 1.95 looks great value alone. With the aforementioned scoring 8 goals in 6 between them and Tigres matches having a total of 10 goals in their last 3, making the over 1.5 look attractive to boost it to 2.25. 1.5 units.
Ligue 1 – Stade Brestois 29 vs. Olympique Marseille – Marseille 1×2 @ 2.01
As Ligue 1 returns ahead of many other European major leagues, we’ve got our eyes on this match between Champions League qualifiers Marseille and battlers Stade Brest. Last season, Marseille managed to finish 2nd in the COVID-shortened schedule whilst scoring 41 goals across 28 games to tie for the third highest scoring team in the division. Meanwhile, Brest were poor defensively down in 14th place – conceding the fifth most goals in the league with 37. Brest have also already played a fixture in this new season – going down 4-0 to Nimes, who finished 18th in the league last season. This is encouraging for us as punters backing Marseille; their high-powered attack of Florian Thauvin, Dimitri Payet and Dario Benedetto should have no trouble blasting through a poor Brest defence on their way to victory. Optimistic punters may feel like betting on Marseille to score multiple goals, but we’ll take the win here.
Anthony Smith vs Alexsandar Rakic – Anthony Smith @ 3.15
The resilient Anthony Smith comes into his sixth consecutive event as the headliner, which is sure to be an epic Light Heavyweight match-up. 5th ranked Smith will enter the ring as an underdog to 8th ranked Aleksander Rakic. Each of Anthony Smith’s last 4 fights have gone to the over, including a five-round decision against Jon Jones, and 60% of Rakic’s UFC fights have gone the distance. Don’t expect this to be a quick one, or an easy battle for either side. Between them, they have only been finished three times in their UFC careers, so it is a near-certainty to go the distance. Smith’s underdog status can be attributed to having been destroyed in his last fight, against Glover Teixeira. It is worth noting, however, that he did not follow his usual game-plan and tired himself out far too early, leaving himself open in the latter stages of the fight. Smith and his team will no-doubt have prepared to come back in style, learning from recent mistakes. Both fighters manage distance well, so don’t expect any swift finishes, but if Smith can get the fight down onto the mat, it could end in TKO, but we’re tipping a decision in Smith’s favour. 1 unit.
UCI World Tour – Tour De France Winner – Primoz Roglic @ 2.59
Heading in as the stronger of two favourites, Roglic is touted as one of the only riders to appear to have improved throughout the recent shutdown period. Thibaut Pinot is likely to make a strong start, but typically falls off toward the latter stages of le Tour, while it is doubtful that the King of Columbia, Egan Bernal, has the experience and mentality to defend his title. The only question over Roglic’s head is how his recent crash affects him. Will he be afraid, is he fully healed? We think he and his trusty rim brakes are ready to go. 1 unit.
