Olympic Games Volleyball – Brazil vs USA – USA to Win @ 2.28
So, who feels like watching some Volleyball? Huge game for two countries which have traditionally performed well at the Olympics. Both head into this game at 2-1, so a win will guarantee a Quarter Finals berth. Brazil are current world #1 and will naturally head into the game as favourite. But USA have been the slightly better form team so far of the two. Impressive against France in their opener, and were a little unlucky to lose to ROC (aka Russia). Lookout for a bloke called Taylor Sander, who is leading the US for spikes (or kills, as they’re known in US). He will be key.
UFC Fight Night – Hall vs. Strickland – Winner – Hall @ 2.85
Uriah is a man on a mission. Prime Time last lost to then-undefeated Paulo Costa, coming in on a four-fight win streak. At 36, he’s in win or go home mode, and knows that a loss or two could mean the end of his UFC career. Strickland bounces around different weight classes, has hardly defeated anyone of note recently, and is lucky to be considered such a heavy favourite here. At best, this should be a coin toss, so I’m backing Uriah for the value at 2.85.
Olympic Basketball – Australia v Germany – Australia -8.5 @ 1.90
The Boomers are 2/2 at Tokyo 2020 as they look to claim their first ever Olympic medal. Germany head into this one with a win and a loss and need a victory to keep their hopes of progressing to the knock-out stage alive. Australia looked to hit its straps in the recent win over Italy after a lacklustre opening triumph over Nigeria. We expect the Aussie to continue get better as the tournament progresses and we think they’ll have too much firepower for a Dennis Schröder-less Germany outfit. Taking Australia at the handicap looks the play in this one.
NBA Draft – Moses Moody Draft Position – Under 10.5 @ 1.98
The NBA Draft is upon us again, and this year’s crop is about as unpredictable as any in recent memory. Apart from the top pick to Detroit almost certainly being Cade Cunningham, the rest of the draft is up in the air as teams value certain players vastly differently to each other and potential trades are in the works which can completely shake up the complexion of the draft.
The Memphis Grizzlies recently made a trade to move up to Pick 10 by acquiring some bad contracts from the New Orleans Pelicans. With the frontcourt being led by recent top picks Jaren Jackson Jr. and Brandon Clarke, Memphis will likely be looking for extra help on the wing to complement their young star at point guard in Ja Morant. It’s been rumoured that they moved up to select Josh Giddey from Australia as Morant’s running mate, but we’re slightly skeptical of the fit between them as Giddey is a natural point guard and needs the ball in his hands to operate – just like Morant.
Moody is our pick here. He’s got good size for an NBA wing at 6’6″ with a huge 7’1″ wingspan, possessing good shooting ability and great defensive instincts to guard opposition stars in the future. These are skills that fit perfectly with Memphis and Morant, who will love the space Moody provides for him by way of his shooting threat and who will get great use out of a wing player who can come in and contribute immediately for them as they push for the playoffs.
It’s even a possibility that Moody doesn’t make it this far down the board – his “high floor” and clear NBA role as a shooter and defender at the very least make him valuable to any team needing help in that position; particularly a team like Golden State at pick 7 (if they don’t trade), Orlando (who need as much help as they can get) or Sacramento (where Moody could blossom into a great companion for their young backcourt). This is a nice line for us to take in our eyes, with our fingers crossed that draft night trades don’t shake things up too much. 1.5 units.
