We’re back with one of the most stacked PPVs of 2021 this weekend. This card features another one of Dana White’s famous 3 title fights in the main card. Although this card has more significance than the other 3 title cards because guess what? We’ve got fans back. After 14 months, we’ve got a packed UFC stadium full of enthusiastic fans. This card is huge, and it features some crazy matchups, lets dive right in!
Weili Zhang vs Rose Namajunas
The last Women’s Strawweight Championship fight won the award for UFC Fight of the year 2020. This is yet another epic battle for the Strawweight Championship and it is expected to be even scarier than last year’s title fight. Fighting out of the red corner is the champion hailing from China, “Magnum” Weili Zhang, and she will be taking on the former champion in “Thug” Rose Namajunas.
Introducing first the champion, Weili Zhang is one of the baddest women on the UFC roster, all of her fights are electric. She’s undefeated in the UFC at the back of her 20 fight MMA unbeaten streak. Zhang believes in actions over words, you would never see her run her mouth in the conferences but when fight night arrives, she leaves everything in the Octagon.
Zhang has beaten 2 former champions in Joanna and Andrade, come Saturday she wants to run through another former champion in Rose. Zhang’s last fight with Joanna is one of the best fights in UFC history, here’s a champion who believes in giving the fans a night to remember.
Zhang is primarily a striker with a kickboxing style of fighting, but she does have 7 submissions in her arsenal to prove that she is a well-rounded champion. Zhang looks to carve her legacy as the greatest female fighter to grace the Octagon and a win over Rose helps her make a case for a super fight with Flyweight Queen Valentina Shevchenko.
Introducing the challenger, Thug Rose is the dark horse of this division because we believe on her night, she can beat anyone. Rose is one of the most well-rounded fighters in the division with a black belt in Karate & Taekwondo to prove her striking prowess. Rose is also a brown belt in Jiu-Jitsu and has 5 submissions in her career to vouch for her ground game.
This is not the first time Rose has been an underdog against an unbeaten champion, she knocked out then-unbeaten Joanna as a 4.50 underdog and had a career highlight. Thug Rose has only one loss in her last 5 fights, which she avenged in a fight of the night war with Andrade. We think Thug Rose is the toughest fight for anyone in this division because of her unexpected fighting nature.
This fight is so good, we believe this fight is going to be the best fight of the night and you should not miss it. You can expect these ladies to go to war and leave no stone unturned to walk out with the championship. In their last fights, Rose walked with a swollen eye and Weili walked out with a broken nose. Will we have a new champion, or will the gold remain safely in China with the reigning Queen?
This is the toughest fight of the night to predict, because of both fighters being so equally good. Zhang is the best striker in the division and has a great gas tank which was proven in her last fight. Contrarily Thug Rose knows how to mix things up well, she will fake takedowns and threaten Zhang with her ground game to put her off.
Thug Rose trains under Trevor Whitman the genius who also coaches Welterweight King Kamaru Usman & ex Interim Lightweight champion Justin Gaethje. Whitman is an expert at making his fighters believe in themselves, he teaches fighters to fight behind a strong jab. Although a very close fight, we are leaning towards Thug Rose here as the underdog, we think Rose by submission at 11 odds is a great play too, but our final prediction involves the judge’s scorecards and Bruce Buffer saying “And New”.
Prediction – Rose Namajunas by Decision
Stake Odds – 5.40 (Odds are Subject to Change)
Valentina Shevchenko vs Jessica Andrade
This matchup in the 125 division for the women’s championship features two of the most exciting fighters on the planet. The reigning and defending champion, Valentina Shevchenko is one of the fiercest competitors the UFC has ever seen. Dominating through the whole of her competition, “The Bullet” has only really face opposition in the form of Amanda Nunes, over two tight bouts. Shevchenko possesses great power, as well as a technical kickboxing game and solid ground game. The way she has cleaned through the division has many fans wondering if anyone will be able to rigidly challenge her. The girl on the other corner, Jessica Andrade, believes she is capable of exactly that. Having a BJJ and kickboxing background, Andrade will look to impose her will on Shev. She has brute force and strength that the woman’s division has not been able to handle in many situations. The key for her in this matchup, is limiting the technicality of Valentina. However, this is not an easy task at all, and will provide a difficult challenge. Overall, I see Shevchenko winning this over a five round decision, and a dominant one at that.
Prediction – Shevchenko by Unanimous Decision
Stake Odds – 2.30 (Odds subject to change)
Uriah Hall vs Chris Weidman
Uriah Hall and Chris Weidman are two of the most storied middleweights in the UFC. Both are in their latter stages of their careers, and looking to receive a spark-plug in this upcoming bout on April 23. On the first side we have Uriah Hall, a heavy hitting kickboxer who has made a career off of flashy knockouts, and being able to sit opponents down with combinations. Hall was once a title challenger himself, and is looking to string his second wing in a row when he faces Chris Weidman. Weidman is a former belt holder, and one of the more well-rounded fighters in the UFC. Sadly, time has not done him well, and his past few fights against top prospects has resulted in some big damage. Weidman’s wrestling background has proven to be very effective in the past, but in recent times, he’s been done in by the lack of boxing defense and chin. Although his most recent fight saw Weidman back to form, he will need to implement a strong game plan to beat Hall. In my opinion, Hall gets this one done by KO, especially if Weidman cannot wrestle and put Hall down on the ground.
Prediction – Hall by TKO/KO
Stake Odds – 3.45 (Odds subject to change)
Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal II
Main event time, this is a rematch between 2 men with bad blood between them, as they look to settle their differences once and for all inside the Octagon this weekend. This fight is huge, we have the reigning, defending Welterweight Champion Kamaru “The Nigerian Nightmare” Usman taking on the Baddest M*therf*ck*r Belt Holder Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal.
Introducing first the champion, Kamaru is the current Pound for Pound no.2 in the UFC roster, and he has surpassed Hall of Famer George St Pierre with his 13-fight win streak. Usman has cleaned out his division by beating all the top 5 contenders, the only reason he accepted a rematch with Gamebred is because their previous encounter was a short notice fight for the challenger. Usman is the kind of champion who does not want the fans to have any arguments against him, he has given Jorge a full camp this time and is ready to remain the undisputed king.
Since their rematch, Usman fought Gilbert Burns and knocked him out in the 3rd round after overcoming some adversities. Usman is one of the best wrestlers in the UFC with 99% control time over his opponents in the UFC. Despite his wrestling credentials Usman’s striking looks better after every fight and in our opinion, he is now the most well-rounded champion on the roster.
Introducing the challenger, Masvidal is also called “Street Jesus” by his fans as he is known to baptize his opponents. Masvidal has the best comeback story in the history of the UFC, he was never in the title-challenging picture before 2019. Masvidal has had 5 controversial split decision losses in his UFC career, and this led him to take a sabbatical from fighting. Jorge took a year off and took part in a survivor reality show in South America, he claims that he had an epiphany that led him to change his fighting style.
Masvidal returned to the UFC in 2019, he knocked out Darren Till in London followed by the most iconic and fastest knockout in the UFC’s history of Ben Askren. These knockouts hyped Masvidal, and he then fought Nate Diaz in a main event bout for the “Baddest M*therf*ck*r” belt and he knocked out Diaz. Jorge won the UFC Fighter of the year award for his 3 knockouts in 2019 and this set him up for a 6-day notice meeting with Welterweight King Usman.
Rematches are always looked to be in favor of the previous winner, their previous encounter was a clean sweep for Kamaru Usman. Although Jorge has his moments, he had his excuse of fighting on 6 days’ notice. This time there will be no excuses, there will only be one undisputed champion. Will their 2nd encounter go any different from the first one? We’ll find out this weekend!
Usman is already argued to be the best Welterweight of all time, and a win over Jorge twice will cement his legacy. Despite being the best wrestler, Usman fights behind a powerful jab with which he broke Colby Covington’s Jaw. Usman is so well-rounded, but he will look to clinch and wrestle to gas out Jorge to take him to later rounds.
Jorge Masvidal will be heading into this fight with everything to prove, and fans want to see “Gamebred” provide something of worth. After the domination he received a few months ago, he will be looking to mix his attack on Usman up, mostly working on takedown defense. Usman on the other hand will be heavily confident, knowing that his wrestling is top-tier, and his boxing being improved.
Masvidal was called the best boxer of the UFC by Ex Welterweight King Tyron Woodley and we agree. Masvidal’s boxing is elite level, he has explosive power generated through his hooks and knees. But will Masvidal’s explosive strength be enough to dethrone Usman? We don’t think so, we are siding with the Nigerian Nightmare, he is the safest bet on the card, and we would recommend betting on him for easy money.
