Hello fight fans, we’re back with another exciting night of fights from the home of the fights, the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
We’ve got an interesting card ahead of us with some ranked veterans fighting for a top position and tough contenders battling it out to earn that number next to their names.
A quick recap from last week’s event, our main event breakdown went completely wrong as both fighters unexpectedly played it too safe.
Although we got it spot-on with our 2nd correct prelim underdog pick in a row with Jamie Mullarkey.
This week we will be breaking down the intriguing main event and giving out some smart betting lines for you guys, so as always, let’s dive right in!
Mackenzie Dern vs Marina Rodriguez
We kick things off in the main event, it’s always fun when two finishers from different worlds collide in the Octagon and we’ve got ourselves a great 5 rounder.
The pathway for the BJJ wizard Mackenzie Dern’s title journey will go through the fellow Brazilian knockout artist Marina Rodriguez.
A two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World champion turned top MMA fighter, Mackenzie Dern has seen the best of both worlds and envisions converting her BJJ success to the MMA universe.
Winning 6 of her 7 UFC bouts, Dern is currently on a 4-fight win streak and on the rise to holding UFC gold one day.
She has transitioned her elite Jiu-Jitsu acumen into her martial arts career and has managed to submit 7 of her 11 wins with a strong 64% finish rate.
Dern has been improving her boxing which she was able to showcase in her unanimous decision win over Virna Jandiroba. Although her strength remains in her threatening submissive ground game.
Dern has a tough dance partner this week in fellow Brazilian contender in Marina Rodriguez.
Rodriguez is coming off two impressive wins with a Knockout of tough contender Amanda Ribas and a decision win in her first headliner against veteran Michelle Waterson.
Rodriguez is a gifted striker with a base in Muay-Thai and a strong boxing foundation. She has fought some tough fighters in her short 8 fight stint in the UFC and come out on top in most of them.
Rodriguez is dangerous wherever the fight goes but she does her best job on the feet and there are not many in the UFC that can match her strike for strike.
This will be a great fight and an intriguing battle between two top contenders in the UFC Strawweight division, a win here could set one of them up for a Title fight.
This fight will be won by the fighter who can take it to their world, Dern’s pathway to victory will be seen on the mat, where she can threaten all kinds of submissions and look for her 8th submission win.
Contrarily, Rodriguez is a great striker, and she will look to utilize her reach advantage, stuff the takedowns and knock out Dern.
Our first best comes on the main card this time in a Women’s Flyweight bout between Sabina Mazo and Mariya Agapova.
Both fighters coming off a loss but Mariya has been put in a big underdog spot by the bookies.
We think she is young and determined, her skillset is very well-rounded and dangerous.
She was favoured to win her last fight at a 1.06 spot and after her first UFC loss has been put at a big 2.55 underdog spot.
We think she is still a dangerous fighter and should get back to the win column this week.
Our second and final pick of this card comes in the main event which is a very close and tough fight to call. Although we do have confidence in the skillset of Mackenzie Dern.
She is very dangerous on the ground, and it does not take long for her to end the night once it hits the mat.
We think Dern has developed the striking to initially hang with Marina on the feet and she can eventually get her on the ground to end the night early.
We are picking the rank 4 Mackenzie Dern to get the job done this weekend. So, enjoy the fights and bet smart fight fans.
